Our goal in the debate process is to develop an objective understanding of both sides of this controversial topic: the history of the Palestinian people, the reasoning for the creation of Israel, etc. Students will be able to explain the historical factors contributing to the establishment of the modern State of Israel in 1948; they will include the Jewish religious connection to the land, antisemitism, the development of Zionism in Europe, and the aftermath of the Holocaust. They will then be able to describe how land and religion plays a role in continuing conflicts in the Middle East (i.e. the Palestinian-Israeli conflict)
Students will specifically work on citing specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources, determining the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; providing an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions, identifying aspects of a text that reveal an author’s point of view or purpose (e.g., loaded language, inclusion or avoidance of particular facts), and distinguishing among fact, opinion, and reasoned judgment in a text.
Outside of our standards we also hope to foster empathy, reasoning & respect throughout this process. We will practice these skills along the way with mock debates & lessons on good presentation skills.
